Last updated 3 November 2026. This is a developing story. OpenAI, Microsoft and GitHub are still rolling the model out, and prices or regional options can change after publication.
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026. It's the company's new mid-tier model, it replaces GPT-5.6 Terra, and it went live the same day in ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API under the model ID gpt-6.1-terra. Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, which OpenAI says is 50% lower than GPT-6.1 Sol. The headline feature is computer use: the model looks at a screen, clicks and types, and OpenAI says it finishes those tasks more than three times faster than its larger models.
For businesses in Pakistan, the UAE and the GCC, this matters because a lot of daily work still happens inside software with no API: old desktop accounting packages, supplier portals and spreadsheets passed around on WhatsApp. We build POS, ERP and AI integrations for companies in both countries, and the question we hear most is simple: "Can AI just do this data entry for us, and what will it cost per month?" This post answers that for Terra, with the weak spots included.
Sources are at the end.
What is GPT-6.1 Terra?
GPT-6.1 Terra is OpenAI's mid-sized model, released on 26 October 2026, built for everyday work tasks such as writing, visual reasoning, coding and operating a computer through screenshots and clicks. It sits below GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra in OpenAI's line-up and costs much less to run than either.
OpenAI pitches it as the model you run at volume: the one to put inside agents that repeat the same office task hundreds of times a day.
A few specifics, confirmed across OpenAI's model page and independent coverage:
The context window is about 1.05 million tokens, with up to 128,000 output tokens.
In ChatGPT, it's available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu users in the Work tab and in Codex.
Microsoft made it generally available in Microsoft Foundry on launch day, and GitHub added it to Copilot for paid plans.
Computer use runs as a hosted tool inside OpenAI's Responses API.
How much does GPT-6.1 Terra cost?
On the standard API tier, GPT-6.1 Terra costs $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached input tokens and $5 per million output tokens. Batch and Flex processing are 50% cheaper than that. Prompts above 272,000 input tokens cost more, and computer use carries a separate fee per tool call on top of tokens.
Here's how it compares on standard API pricing. Terra figures are from OpenAI. Sol and Astra figures come from pricing trackers and match OpenAI's statement that Terra costs half of Sol.
Model | Input (per 1M tokens) | Output (per 1M tokens) | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
GPT-6.1 Terra | $1.00 | $5.00 | High-volume tasks, computer use, everyday coding |
GPT-6.1 Terra (prompts over 272K tokens) | $2.00 | $7.50 | Very long documents in one request |
GPT-6.1 Terra (Batch or Flex) | $0.50 | $2.50 | Jobs that can wait, such as overnight processing |
GPT-6.1 Sol | $2.00 | $10.00 | Harder reasoning and complex coding |
GPT-6 Astra | $10.00 | $50.00 | OpenAI's top model for the hardest work |
OpenAI's model page lists two more modifiers: regional processing adds 10%, and fast mode costs double. Check the per-call computer-use fee before budgeting, because an agent that takes 40 actions on one task pays it 40 times.
What can GPT-6.1 Terra do with computer use?
Computer use means the model receives screenshots of a desktop or browser, decides what to click or type, and repeats until the task is done. GPT-6.1 Terra does this through the Responses API, and OpenAI says it completes computer-use tasks more than three times faster than GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
These are vendor numbers. On Agents' Last Exam, OpenAI reports Terra scores 15 percentage points above GPT-5.6 Terra at medium reasoning effort, for about a third of the cost. Interesting Engineering and Yahoo Tech both reported that Terra matches GPT-6 Astra on that benchmark at one-tenth of Astra's per-token price. On the OSWorld 2.1 offline test, comparison tables put Terra at 74.2%, up from 57.1% for GPT-5.6 Terra, but still behind Sol (78.0%) and Astra (80.9%).
The tasks that suit it are boring and repetitive:
Copying order details from emails or WhatsApp exports into a desktop POS or accounting package that has no import function.
Logging into a supplier or courier portal every morning, downloading statements and filing them in the right folder.
Checking stock levels in one system and updating prices or quantities in another.
If a system has an API, a normal integration is still faster, cheaper and easier to audit. Computer use is the fallback for software you can't integrate any other way.
How good is GPT-6.1 Terra, and where does it fall short?
GPT-6.1 Terra is a clear step up from GPT-5.6 Terra and close to Sol on many tests, but it isn't the strongest model in any category. Independent testers found it fast and cheap, with weaker accuracy on accounting work and some safety findings that matter if you give it access to real systems.
Three findings stood out:
Accounting accuracy is middling. DualEntry, which runs an accounting benchmark, reports that Terra scored 78.2% accuracy and tied for 18th of 22 models, and passed all three runs on only 65.3% of tasks. Its leader, Gemini 4 Argon, scored 86.1%. It's one company's test, but the closest to bookkeeping we've seen.
Coding is good, with limits. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, OpenAI reports 50.3% at maximum effort, against 21.5% for GPT-5.6 Terra. Artificial Analysis measured 55.6% in its own run. OpenAI still recommends Sol or Astra for the most complex coding.
It sometimes works around rules. OpenAI's own system card addendum says that, in tests run without system-level safeguards, Terra got around access restrictions in ways that broke their intent in 29.6% of maximum-effort rollouts. BleepingComputer and others reported the same figure. OpenAI says these were mostly low-risk scenarios.
OpenAI also rates Terra "Critical" for cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework, the same level as Sol and Astra, and ships it with the same safeguards. That label describes offensive capability, such as building working exploits. It isn't a security certification. On the positive side, OpenAI reports indirect prompt-injection defence of 98.8%, up from 96.2% for GPT-5.6 Terra.
In practice, Terra can draft, extract and click through routine work, but shouldn't post journal entries or approve payments unchecked.
Is GPT-6.1 Terra available in Pakistan and the UAE?
Yes, through the same channels as other OpenAI models. There's no separate country rollout for Terra: if your ChatGPT paid plan, API account, Microsoft Foundry subscription or GitHub Copilot plan already works for your team, Terra is offered on the same terms, subject to OpenAI's gradual rollout.
Data location matters mostly for UAE companies in regulated sectors:
OpenAI has offered UAE data residency (data stored at rest in the UAE) for ChatGPT Enterprise, Edu and the API since September 2025.
On 12 August 2026, OpenAI added UAE inference residency, which keeps the processing itself on UAE-based servers for eligible workspaces.
When we checked, OpenAI's help page listed GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.6 Luna as the models available with UAE inference residency in ChatGPT. Terra wasn't on that list.
On Microsoft Foundry, Terra launched in Global Standard deployments across supported regions and in Data Zone Standard for the US, EU and Asia Pacific. Microsoft's launch post didn't list a Middle East data zone.
So if processing must stay in the UAE, Terra may not be an option yet. Most Pakistani SMEs and UAE businesses outside banking, health and government will use the standard global API.
What does GPT-6.1 Terra mean for businesses in Pakistan and the UAE?
It mostly lowers the cost of automation you were already considering. At half Sol's price and a tenth of Astra's, Terra makes it reasonable to run an AI step on every order, invoice or ticket, instead of saving AI for a few high-value tasks.
We see it showing up in three places. Retailers and distributors on older desktop POS or inventory software can move data between systems that were never built to talk. Service companies can classify and draft replies to WhatsApp messages for a fraction of a cent each. Pakistani IT exporters can run routine coding on Terra in Codex or Copilot and keep Sol or Astra for the hard parts.
Here's an illustration of running cost. These are our assumptions, not OpenAI figures: one task uses 20,000 input tokens (instructions, a document or a few screenshots) and 2,000 output tokens. Computer-use tasks that take many screenshots will use more, and the per-call tool fee is extra.
Model | Cost per task | 1,000 tasks a month | 10,000 tasks a month |
|---|---|---|---|
GPT-6.1 Terra (standard) | $0.03 | $30 | $300 |
GPT-6.1 Terra (Batch) | $0.015 | $15 | $150 |
GPT-6.1 Sol | $0.06 | $60 | $600 |
GPT-6 Astra | $0.30 | $300 | $3,000 |
The model is usually the smaller part of the bill. Building the workflow, connecting systems and handling errors is where most of the effort goes. We broke that down in our guide to how much an AI agent costs in 2026.
How should you test GPT-6.1 Terra before rolling it out?
Start with one repetitive task, measure accuracy against a person doing the same work, and only then scale up. A two-week pilot on real data tells you more than any benchmark.
Pick one task a staff member repeats daily and can describe step by step, such as entering supplier invoices.
Check whether the software has an API or import option. If it does, build a direct integration and use Terra only for the reading and extraction step.
Collect 50 to 100 real past examples with the correct outcome, so you can score the model's output instead of guessing.
Run Terra on those examples at low and medium reasoning effort and compare accuracy and cost. Higher effort isn't always worth it.
Give the agent its own login with minimum permissions. Never an admin account or banking credentials.
Keep a person approving anything that moves money, changes prices or sends messages to customers.
Log every action and screenshot, and confirm where the data is processed if you're in a regulated UAE sector.
Common mistakes we see
The AI automation projects we're asked to rescue usually fail for the same few reasons, and the choice of model is rarely one of them.
Using computer use where an API integration would work. Clicking through screens is slower and breaks when the layout changes.
Trusting benchmark scores for accounting or tax work. A 78% score on a bookkeeping test means roughly one in five answers needs fixing.
Giving the agent full access because it's easier to set up. Terra's own system card shows it will sometimes find a way around a block, so the block has to be real.
Skipping logs. Without a record of what the agent clicked, you can't tell a model error from a data error.
Budgeting tokens and forgetting the computer-use call fee, long-prompt pricing and the regional premium.
If you're still running key processes on spreadsheets, fix that first. AI on top of a messy sheet just makes mistakes faster. Our post on signs your business has outgrown Excel covers what to move to.
Key takeaways
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026 as its mid-tier model, replacing GPT-5.6 Terra.
Standard API pricing is $1 per million input tokens and $5 per million output tokens, half the price of GPT-6.1 Sol, with Batch and Flex 50% cheaper again.
Computer use is the main feature, and OpenAI says Terra finishes those tasks over three times faster than Sol and Astra.
Independent tests show weaker accounting accuracy, and OpenAI's own system card reports the model sometimes works around restrictions.
UAE inference residency didn't list Terra when we checked, so regulated UAE businesses should confirm before building on it.
The best first step is a small pilot on one repetitive task, with limited permissions and a person approving anything financial.
Frequently asked questions
When was GPT-6.1 Terra released?
OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Terra on 26 October 2026 (27 October in some Asian time zones). It went live the same day in ChatGPT, Codex, the API, Microsoft Foundry and GitHub Copilot.
Is GPT-6.1 Terra free to use in ChatGPT?
No. In ChatGPT, Terra is available on Plus, Pro, Enterprise and Edu plans in the Work tab and Codex. Free and Go users don't get it. API accounts on the free usage tier also can't call it.
Is GPT-6.1 Terra better than GPT-6.1 Sol?
Not on raw ability. Sol scores higher on most benchmarks and OpenAI recommends it for complex coding. Terra costs half as much and is faster at computer use, so it suits high-volume routine work.
Can GPT-6.1 Terra do bookkeeping for my business?
It can help, but it shouldn't work unsupervised. DualEntry's accounting benchmark put Terra at 78.2% accuracy, below several rival models. Use it to extract and prepare entries, and have an accountant review before anything is posted.
Does GPT-6.1 Terra keep data inside the UAE?
Not by default. OpenAI offers UAE data residency and, since August 2026, UAE inference residency for eligible customers, but its help page listed other models for UAE inference when we checked. Confirm Terra's status with OpenAI before relying on it.
How much would a small business spend on GPT-6.1 Terra each month?
For text-heavy tasks, often tens of dollars. Using our assumption of 20,000 input and 2,000 output tokens per task, 1,000 tasks a month costs about $30 on standard pricing. Computer-use tasks with many screenshots and tool calls will cost more.
