AI Shopping on Shopify: How to Get Found in ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot (2026)
ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot now recommend Shopify products, and some take the order. Here is how it works, who is eligible, and what Pakistan and UAE stores can do now.

Ask ChatGPT for "a linen shirt under $60 that ships to Texas" and it now answers with real products, prices and a button to buy. A lot of those products come from Shopify stores, and most of the store owners did nothing to make it happen. Shopify switched it on for them.
Shopify calls this Agentic Storefronts. It's active by default for eligible stores, and it sends your products to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's AI. In late September 2026 Google went a step further and started letting eligible Shopify merchants take orders inside AI Mode and the Gemini app, without the shopper visiting the store at all.
We build Shopify apps and stores for businesses in Pakistan and the Gulf, and clients have started asking whether they're "in ChatGPT" yet. The honest answer for most of them is: not fully, because the checkout side is still mostly limited to stores selling to US customers. But the product data work is the same wherever you sell, and it's worth doing now. This guide explains how it works, who's eligible and what to fix. Sources are at the end.
What is AI shopping on Shopify?
AI shopping on Shopify means AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot can show your products in their answers and, on some channels, take the order. Shopify's feature for this is Agentic Storefronts. It shares your product data through Shopify Catalog, and it's active by default for eligible stores. You manage it in your Shopify admin under Sales channels, then Agentic.
"Agentic" is the industry's word for software that acts on someone's behalf. Here it means an AI assistant that searches, compares and sometimes buys for the shopper.
Which AI channels can show your Shopify products?
Shopify's Help Center lists four, and they don't all work the same way. Eligibility below is as summarised from Shopify's channel pages, and it changes often, so check your own admin.
Channel | Where the customer pays | Who's eligible |
|---|---|---|
ChatGPT | On your own store's checkout, opened in ChatGPT's in-app browser or a new tab | Stores that sell to US customers (the store can be based elsewhere), with Catalog-eligible products and store policies filled in |
Google AI Mode and Gemini | Inside Google, through a Shopify-powered checkout, when direct checkout is on | Stores based in and selling to the US, connected to Google Merchant Center |
Microsoft Copilot | Inside Copilot, through a Shopify-powered checkout | Stores that sell to the US |
Meta AI | Inside Meta's apps, through a Shopify-powered checkout | Customers in the US, Canada or Mexico, with the Facebook and Instagram channel syncing products |
Whichever channel the order comes from, Shopify says you keep ownership of the customer relationship and everything after the purchase. The order shows up in your admin with the channel or referrer marked on it.
Can you actually sell inside ChatGPT?
Not in the way the early headlines said. OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, where the shopper paid inside the chat. Adoption was slow, and in March 2026 OpenAI stepped back from running checkout itself.
Shopify's Help Center now describes ChatGPT as a "discovery-focused referrer platform". ChatGPT recommends your product, and the customer finishes the purchase on your store's normal checkout. If you read a guide that tells you to "set up ChatGPT Instant Checkout" for your Shopify store, it's out of date.
For you, that's mostly good news. The sale happens on your checkout, with your payment gateway, your shipping rules and your upsells.
What changed with Google AI Mode and Gemini?
In late September 2026, Search Engine Land reported that Google is allowing eligible Shopify merchants to sell directly through AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. The shopper can buy without leaving Google. This runs on the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), an open standard Shopify and Google announced in January 2026 for how AI assistants place orders with merchants.
Two details matter. Direct checkout can switch on automatically once your products are connected through Google Merchant Center, so some merchants are enrolled without doing anything. And you can opt out if you'd prefer buyers to check out on your own site, which some brands will want for upsells and email sign-ups.
Does this work for stores in Pakistan and the UAE?
Only partly, for now.
If your store is based in Pakistan or the UAE and you sell to customers in the United States, ChatGPT is open to you. Shopify's eligibility for ChatGPT is about where you sell, and the store can be based elsewhere. Copilot has a similar "sells to the US" condition. Google's direct checkout is stricter and asks for a US-based store.
If you only sell locally, to customers in Pakistan or the Gulf, none of the four channels covers you yet. We couldn't find a date from Shopify for other countries, so we won't guess at one.
One thing we couldn't confirm: how the Shopify-powered direct checkout behaves for stores that don't have Shopify Payments, which includes every store in Pakistan. If you're in that position and selling to the US, ask Shopify support before you rely on in-chat checkout. ChatGPT isn't affected by this, because it sends the buyer to your own checkout.
So is this worth your time if you sell locally? We think yes, for one reason. The AI channels read the same product data that Google Shopping, your own site search and your customers read. Cleaning it up pays off today, and you're ready when the channels open in your market.
How do you check whether your store is included?
In your Shopify admin, open Sales channels and look for Agentic. If you're eligible, the AI channels are listed there with their status.
Accept the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service if asked. You need to agree to them to use the feature.
Check that your store policies (refund, shipping, privacy, terms) are filled in. ChatGPT eligibility depends on them.
For Google, check that your products are in Google Merchant Center, through the Google and YouTube sales channel or a feed.
For Meta, check that the Facebook and Instagram channel is syncing products.
Search for one of your own products in ChatGPT or Gemini, the way a customer would describe it. If it doesn't appear, start with your product data.
How do you make your products easier for AI to recommend?
An AI assistant can't look at your product photo and feel the fabric. It matches the shopper's request against the text and structured fields you've filled in. A product titled "Summer Vibes Collection #4" gives it nothing to match. Shopify Catalog does some of this for you by inferring categories and attributes, but it can only work with what's there.
This is the checklist we use when we audit a client's catalogue:
Write titles that say what the product is: type, material, key feature, size or colour. "Men's linen shirt, long sleeve, white" beats a campaign name.
Answer real customer questions in the description. What is it made of, what does it fit, how do you wash it, what's in the box?
Set the product category and fill in the attributes Shopify suggests for it.
Keep variants simple, with clear option names like Size and Colour, and an image for each variant.
Keep price and stock accurate. An assistant that recommends an out-of-stock item is a lost sale and an annoyed shopper.
Add GTINs or barcodes where your products have them.
If important details live in metafields, map them so the catalogue can read them.
Shopify only includes direct-to-consumer products. Anything that's B2B-only, behind a login or password-protected is left out automatically.
What does it cost?
Shopify's channel pages say there are no channel fees for selling in these AI channels. You pay your normal payment processing fees on the order. For stores without Shopify Payments, that means your gateway's fee plus Shopify's third-party transaction fee, the same as any other online order. We covered those numbers in our guide to Shopify payment gateways in Pakistan.
You may see older articles mention a 4 percent OpenAI fee. That was reported for the earlier Instant Checkout model, which has been scaled back. Check Shopify's current terms before you plan around any fee figure.
Shopify also has a free Agentic plan for brands that don't run their store on Shopify but want their products in Shopify Catalog. It has no monthly fee, direct checkout is off by default, and transaction fees apply to direct-checkout orders.
How do you opt out?
You can manage or remove AI channels under Sales channels, then Agentic. Shopify notes that removing Catalog access for ChatGPT or Copilot can take up to 7 days to take effect. To hide a single product everywhere, set it to Unlisted.
Reasons we've heard for opting out: products with legal restrictions in some markets, pricing that differs by customer, or simply wanting every buyer to pass through your own site. Those are fair. Just make it a decision and not something you forgot to check.
What should developers know about UCP?
If you build Shopify apps or custom storefronts, UCP is the part to read up on. According to Shopify's Spring '26 developer update, merchants are UCP-enabled by default and don't need to build anything. Storefronts advertise their UCP version at a well-known URL, and the specification is published at ucp.dev. Shopify retired its older Storefront MCP catalog and cart tools at the end of August 2026 in favour of UCP, so anything you built on those needs moving.
UCP is designed to work with any payment processor. That matters for markets like Pakistan, where Shopify Payments isn't available.
Common mistakes we see
Following 2025 guides about ChatGPT Instant Checkout, which no longer describes how it works for Shopify stores.
Assuming you're included because you're on Shopify, without checking eligibility for where you sell.
Leaving store policies blank.
Product titles written for a campaign and not for a search.
Not noticing that Google direct checkout switched on automatically.
Ignoring where AI orders come from. Check the channel attribution on orders each month so you know what's working.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my Shopify store on ChatGPT?
If your store is eligible, it's already on by default. Eligibility needs you to sell to US customers, have products that qualify for Shopify Catalog and have your store policies completed. Check under Sales channels, then Agentic, in your Shopify admin.
Is selling through AI channels free on Shopify?
Shopify says there are no channel fees for these AI channels. You still pay your usual payment processing fees on each order.
Can a Pakistani Shopify store appear in ChatGPT?
Yes, if it sells to customers in the US and meets the other conditions, because the store doesn't have to be based in the US for ChatGPT. Stores that only sell within Pakistan aren't covered yet.
What is the Universal Commerce Protocol?
UCP is an open standard, announced by Shopify and Google in January 2026, that defines how AI assistants browse products and place orders with merchants. Shopify stores support it by default.
What is Shopify Catalog?
Shopify Catalog is Shopify's product data layer for AI channels. It organises your products by inferring categories, extracting attributes and grouping variants so assistants can match them to what shoppers ask for.
Do I need an app to sell on ChatGPT or Gemini?
No. For eligible stores it's built into Shopify. For Google you need your products in Google Merchant Center, and for Meta you need the Facebook and Instagram channel.
Will AI shopping replace SEO?
We don't think so. People still search on Google, and the work overlaps: clear titles, complete product data and accurate stock help in both places.
